IoT (Internet of Things)

It all started with the birth of the Internet in January 1983 when ARPANET officially adopted TCP/IP protocol and standardized this network of connected computers as the internet. This can also be taken as the official birthday of the modern internet.

January 1991 was the start of a revolution that’s called Web Browser and Aug 1991 made this revolution open for general public use. This is how the internet started and reached to common people. The internet is responsible to make distances shorter and to make communication faster. The people, around the globe, are using the Internet every day and multibillion-dollar industries are running over it. The Internet has changed the face of modern business and now not only humans but nonhumans are also using it.

The term IoT is almost two decades old now and it all started by a consulting firm when they are proposing an RFID tracking for vehicles and wanted to share that tracking data to centralized servers. P&G coined this term IoT and world learned that the Internet of Things is a technology where devices, sensors, vehicles, machines, and other non-living things are generating data and pushing that data over the internet.

IoT faced challenges of scalability in initial days due to a lack of IP address in the IPv4 era. But with the invention of the IPv6 address, this problem got vanished. Industries demanded a more and more innovative solution and IoT delivered that in the form of video analytics, cold chain, cold storage automation, assembly line automation, and even in medicines.

As mentioned earlier, video analytics and surveillance are the domains where IoT is heavily used. Heavy industries are using an IoT based surveillance solution for better safety and public announcements. Security agencies are using facial recognition by using edge analytics and this technology will be used for boarding pass free check-in on airports. Japan has already done it with the help of one of the biggest IoT player, NEC Corporation. Stack overflow trends for IoT for the last decade can be seen in the below picture and the spike in the past few years is clearly visible here.

Internet of Things is high in demand and companies are paying good salaries. According to Indeed jobs website, a senior IoT developer is making $ 176k per annum. While in India, a mid-level IoT developer is making somewhere INR 16 Lakh per annum.

Cold stores and temperature intensive manufacturing units are using IoT to monitor the temperatures at various stages and achieving better quality and also minimizing the losses. IoT sensors are monitoring temperature and oxygen level for seafood and now the consumer can enjoy healthy and fresh seafood even after months.

Edge analytics and distributed edge computing is the latest trend in IoT. Where computing is done on edges and the small server runs in IoT clusters. These clusters get synced with the main server on a periodic basis. Intel is creating a lot of IoT kits for industries and for hobbyists both, and one should seriously watch this space and should watch the innovation in it. Schools are also pushing IoT for kids and kids are also showing great interest in it. So, one can also see a great future as an IoT trainer for young school kids.

The push of the smart city is generating a huge demand for IoT skills and this trend is not seeing any decline in this new decade too. Govt. India has announced the development of 100 smart cities and it is already in development. Similar trends are there for other countries too. So, IoT engineers have a secure future for the next 10 years at least.
